Chatbots
Creating chatbots was one of the most challenging and innovative activities of the project, as our students had no previous knowledge or experience in chatbot development. Therefore, artificial intelligence was used as a supporting tool throughout the learning and development process.
The main aim of this activity was to introduce students to the concept of chatbots and help them understand what a chatbot is, how it works, what it can be used for, and how it can be created. With the support of AI tools, students explored the basic principles of chatbot development and took their first practical steps in creating their own chatbots related to the project topics.
The activity proved to be quite challenging, and not all students were able to successfully create a functioning chatbot. Only a small number of students managed to develop a more complete and meaningful chatbot related to the project topic. However, the main purpose of the activity was not to produce technically advanced products, but to give students the opportunity to experiment, learn through practice, and gain their first experience with this type of digital tool.
As this was the students’ first experience with chatbot development, the created chatbots are relatively simple and were not intended for large-scale or global use. The main value of the activity was the learning process itself. Even when students did not manage to complete a fully functioning chatbot, they gained a better understanding of how chatbots and AI-supported tools work, what possibilities they offer, and what challenges are involved in developing them.
Through this activity, students developed their digital competence, problem-solving skills, creativity and understanding of how artificial intelligence can be used purposefully in education and in connection with environmental topics. The experience also provided a useful starting point for future activities, where students can further develop their skills, improve the existing chatbots and gradually create more advanced AI-supported educational resources.
What is ChatBot?
A chatbot is a digital tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to understand questions, generate answers and interact with users. An AI chatbot can be created using platforms such as Chatbase or by connecting a specially designed application to an AI service.
EcoBot AI – An Interactive Environmental Learning Assistant
As part of our Nordplus project, “Unity in Diversity – Strengthening Minds Together!”, we developed EcoBot AI to support environmental education and promote the meaningful use of artificial intelligence in learning.
EcoBot AI is designed to help students explore biodiversity, sustainability and environmental challenges, as well as compare ecosystems in Latvia, Estonia and the Faroe Islands. Students can ask questions, receive explanations, generate quizzes and explore environmental topics independently.
Using an AI chatbot can develop students' digital literacy, critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills and environmental awareness. It also encourages independent learning and demonstrates how modern technology can support education and international cooperation.
An important aspect of the project is responsible AI use. Students should learn that AI-generated information is not always accurate and must be critically evaluated and verified using reliable sources.
EcoBot AI is intended to become a reusable educational resource for all three partner schools, supporting future lessons, international collaboration and sustainability education.

Creating an AI Chatbot
AI chatbots can be created using different online platforms and tools that connect a simple chat interface with an artificial intelligence service. In this way, users can ask questions in natural language and receive automatically generated answers.
Such chatbots can be adapted to different educational topics, for example biodiversity, sustainability, environmental protection or digital literacy. Teachers and students can use them as interactive learning tools, for revision, independent learning, quizzes or project activities.
Creating and testing chatbots also helps learners understand how artificial intelligence works, what its possibilities and limitations are, and why information generated by AI should always be checked critically and used responsibly.
Project Journey Bot with Google AI Mode
Google AI Mode can be used as a simple way to create an interactive project assistant without programming. It allows users to ask questions, continue the conversation with follow-up questions, and receive AI-generated answers based on information from the web.
For our Nordplus Junior project “Unity in Diversity – Strengthening Minds Together!”, Google AI Mode can be used to explore topics connected with the project, such as the partner countries, culture, school life, international mobility, host-family experiences, intercultural learning and project activities.
A possible starting prompt is:
Project Journey Bot ✈️ – Unity in Diversity – Strengthening Minds Together! This Nordplus Junior project connects Latvia, Estonia and the Faroe Islands. Ask questions about the partner countries, culture, school life, international mobility, host-family experiences, intercultural learning and the activities carried out during the project. You can also ask for quizzes, comparisons or interesting facts.
After the first AI response is created, the conversation can be shared using the Share option and a link can be copied and published on the project website.
Anyone who opens the shared link can read the original conversation and continue by asking additional questions in their own AI Mode session.
This is a simple way to create an interactive learning resource for students and teachers. It can support independent learning, curiosity, digital competence and intercultural understanding. It also demonstrates how AI can be used meaningfully in education.
Important: AI-generated information may contain mistakes, so important facts should always be checked using reliable sources.
